JOIN THE CLUB
The club is intended for players at all levels – even beginners!
Why Join?
FUN - By being a member, you will support Sligo while expanding your network of golf friends. You can participate in our leagues, tournaments, season-long contests, and many social gatherings. We’ll help you establish or maintain an official USGA handicap. We will even award “Sligo Player of the Year” for men, women, senior, and junior categories. Lots of fun to be had!
IMPROVE THE COURSE - Just as important as having fun, the Sligo Creek Golf Club will sponsor or support volunteer activities to maintain or improve the course. We can help clean up the course – removing overgrowth or fallen branches, create planting boxes at tees, and spruce up the patio area.
Your membership dues are a charitable contribution. There will be nominal costs to run the club, but we are committed to applying at least 85% of collected dues to the SCGA Capital Improvement and Programs Fund.
The SCGA has asserted to County Officials that our community is committed to solidifying Sligo as a permanent down-county golf facility. Its non-profit 501(c)(3) application is pending with the IRS and receipts will be issued for your donation if/once approved.
The Capital Improvements and Programs Fund has been established. Money contributed to this fund will be used exclusively for making improvements to the course (e.g., new sand traps) and/or supporting programs for groups like First Tee or Wounded Warriors. The goal is to raise more than $10,000 in early 2010.
So we hope you will join us in supporting Sligo Creek Golf Course while having fun with others who share the cause.
Your $100 contribution will not only help us improve the course, but will symbolically represent our community’s commitment to keeping the only down county public golf facility open for all to enjoy!
Note: We plan to negotiate some concessions from the course operator for our club in the future. Until we know who the operator will be (e.g. MCRA, a third-party operator), we aren't able to do so.
Each membership is $100 per person.

CLUB VISION
In Ireland and Scotland, many "clubs" share one course and are, in fact, private organizations that patronize, but do not own, the course. In the states, The Presidio Golf Club has that relationship with the famous Presidio public course in San Francisco. In that spirit we have formed the Sligo Creek Golf Club. The club will be under the non-profit umbrella of the Sligo Creek Golf Association, but will have its own dues, budget, officers, events, etc. The purpose of any golf club is to have fun and share great times with friends, but in our case we also have a mission to serve people and keep Sligo Creek Golf Course open. This club is formed to serve all three purposes.
The club will sponsor tournaments, leagues and season long contests, all at Sligo Creek Golf Course. We will hold social gatherings at local establishments, play days at the course and a year-end Club Championship. We'll help you establish and maintain an official USGA handicap and introduce you to many new friends to partner with or play against. We'll even award a club Player of the Year for men, women and seniors! Joining is a great way to expand your network of golf friends.
And we'll also give you an avenue to volunteer in the maintenance and improvements at the course, like removing overgrowth or fallen branches, creating planting boxes at the tees, and sprucing up the patio area. You may prefer to volunteer to administer a tournament or first tee event or even plan throw a party at your house or a local establishment. There's something fun for everyone and we expect our members to volunteer in some way and serve as officers at some time. We have elections for 10 posts each year.
With our dues, we'll donate to the course capital improvements fund and activities at the course. These contributions will be useful to the course and our members but they will also symbolically represent our community's commitment to keeping the course open which is very important right now. We'll have fun, meet people, serve others and show the County leaders that we are committed to the course at the same time.
The cost is $100.00 to join. Approximately $15.00 will be given right back to you in the form of a club logo hat and some administrative costs for tournaments, outings, gatherings and organizing volunteers. There will be these nominal costs to run the club, but we are committed to applying at least 85% of collected dues to the SCGA Capital Improvement and Programs Fund. Money contributed to this fund will be used exclusively for making improvements to the course (e.g., new sand traps) and/or supporting programs for groups like First Tee or Wounded Warriors playing at Sligo Creek. The fee is only $50.00 for accompanying kids, 17 and under, with a joining adult. The goal is to raise more than $10,000 in early 2010 and start the club with at least 120 people. After only two weeks, we had close to 30 members.
The membership fee is a tax-deductible donation to build the Capital Improvements Fund and to establish the club. Our non-profit 501(c)(3) application is pending with the IRS and receipts will be issued for your donation if/once approved. In the future, when we have a larger membership and we know who the course operator will be (e.g., MCRA, a third-party operator) we will work to get a deal with the course for discounted play, etc. But for now, joining is a charitable act to help save the course and start the club. What this means is that tournaments, events and social gatherings may have entry fees, as well. But that's the case at every club. Unlike other clubs, there are no minimums or an initiation fee. We encourage all ages and skill levels to join. The club is for men and women and has no admission process or vetting. If you play golf or just support Sligo Creek Golf Course, we'd love to see you at our member events and social gatherings.
Sincerely,
John Weaver, Acting Club President
